I had my air handler replaced and the crooks that did it talked me into a thick filter. The one that came with the install worked fine, but when I tried to replace it, I couldn't find any local suppliers except the installer, who would gladly replace it for $50/filter. Yeah, right.
I learned three things about these filters: 1) If the HVAC in you house is not designed for a high MERV filter, don't get one. The system, can't handle that level of air resistance. 2) The furnace filter is meant to keep the furnace clean, not the air in your house. 3) If you use a high MERV filter, expect your furnace efficiency to drop dramatically. I learned I had to use a cheapie MERV 0 (well, maybe not that low) filter in winter otherwise my house couldn't stay warm!
So I was glad to find these filters with a lower (7) MERV rating and at a reasonable price. I hope I can get by with changing them every 3 or 4 months. If not, it's back to 1" cheapies.
